Waiting for a hypothetical and expected version 4.2, OpenOffice 4.1.4 released a few days ago, fixing about thirty bugs.
Several platforms are supported, Linux, Mac, and some Linux distributions (RPM and Debian), unfortunately, the OS of one of my machines is not supported, it’s Solus OS. A powerful distribution (hardware recognition, efficiency on small CPU) but whose library is not really exceptional and which does not offer OpenOffice.
Yes, I chose to ignore LibreOffice, essentially by professional choice.
As I searched, I stumbled across this old thread that allowed me to install OpenOffice without any difficulty on my dear distribution.
Here’s how to do it:
1 – download the. deb package corresponding to your CPU architecture, for Solus Os, select x86-64 bits.
2 – uncompress the downloaded tar. gz archive.
3 – open a terminal in the DEBS folder
4 – enter this command.
For Solus you must first install the dpkg package
sudo eopkg it dpkg
The dpkg command with the -x option ensures unzipping of packages without installation in the system tree.
for ix in *.deb; do echo $ix; dpkg -x $ix tmp/; done
5 – browse in the Desktop Integration folder and enter the same command (not necessary for the portable version)
6a – installation in Solus OS: copy the contents of the two tmp folders to the root directory of the system with root rights. If all goes well, new menus appear in the Budgie applications list.
6b – in the portable world, copy the /tmp/opt folder to a removable disk formatted in ext. To launch OpenOffice, navigate to the /opt/openoffice4/program folder and click soffice
